Vicuña - historically the Incas people would round up these wild animals every 3 to 5 years to shear them, releasing them afterwards, and using the soft wool to make fabrics for nobility - with the Spanish conquest of Peru, the soft wool and hide of the Vicuna became highly desired by the Spaniards, and thousands were slaughtered annually, and almost hunted to extinction - when liberation from Spanish rule came in 1825, Vicunas became a symbol in Peru (today their national animal) and was protected by law - their populations have drastically improved with conservation efforts of all the countries - these mother and fawn/cria in the El Tatio Geyser Field - northern Antofagasta region.
