The 3rd largest country of South America (20th on Earth), consisting of 3 natural or geographical zones: 1. Costa - a narrow ribbon of coastal desert plains, covering ≈ 12% of the land area, with an arid climate along the Pacific coast, with the garua (coastal fog) forming when the cold Humboldt Current air flows into the warm air mass along the coastal desert - 2. Sierra - covering ≈ 28% of the terrain with slopes and high peaks of the Andes Range, where temperate to frigid climate exists year-round - 3. Selva - the jungle area of the Amazon Basin, comprising ≈ 60% of Peru's land area, the tropical rain forest, with a year-round warm and humid climate, where its altitude ranges from about 250-3,300 ft/75-1,000 m.
