The 3rd largest country of South America (20th on Earth), consisting of 3 natural or geographical zones: 1. Costa - a narrow ribbon of coastal desert plains, covering ≈ 12% of the land area, with an arid climate along the Pacific coast, with the garua (coastal fog) forming when the cold Humboldt Current air flows into the warm air mass along the coastal desert - 2. Sierra - covering ≈ 28% of the terrain with slopes and high peaks of the Andes Range, where temperate to frigid climate exists year-round - 3. Selva - the jungle area of the Amazon Basin, comprising ≈ 60% of Peru's land area, the tropical rain forest, with a year-round warm and humid climate, where its altitude ranges from about 250-3,300 ft/75-1,000 m. From the eroded and mineral pigment rich sedimentary rock along the northeastern slope from Cerro Patán, in the Black Range, along the northeastern area of the Río Santa Valley - beyond across the river to the cultivated slope in the Yuramarca district, in the northwestern Huaylas province - then further to the eroded slopes and ridge along the western flank of Nevado Champará, in the Cordillera Blanca, in the southern Corongo province - with above and distal the southeastern upper ridge, from along Cerro Loma Grande Piñito - all in the Ancash department - western Peru.
