Switzerland
Switzerland - officially the Swiss Confederation, is a federal republic consisting of 26 cantons, with Bern as the seat of the federal authorities. The Swiss Confederation has a long history of neutrality - it has not been in a state of war internationally since 1815—and did not join the United Nations until 2002. Switzerland is also the birthplace of the Red Cross. The Swiss motto is "one for all and all for one". Switzerland comprises 4 official languages: German, French, and Italian, and Romansh. Switzerland gained its independence as a federal state in 1848, with the creation of a federal constitution. Switzerland contains three basic topographical areas: the Swiss Alps on the south, the Central Plateau or Middleland, and the Jura Mountains on the north.
