UNESCO site - Uruguay
These images are from the town of Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest town (founded 1680) in Uruguay. The Historic Quarter is also the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Uruguay as of 2012. This historic town is situated along the Rio de la Plata and is the capital of the Colonia Department, the far southwestern area of the country. Originally founded by the Portuguese - conquered by Spain in 1778 - and Independence between 1811-1828. The country covers around 68,000 mi² (176,000 km²), about the size of Oklahoma.
